A Complete Travel Guide and Tips To Ayodhya Pahar Purulia

A Little Background

According to Hindu mythology, Rama and Sita had come to Ajodhya Hills and stayed during their exile. Sita was thirsty and Ram pierced an arrow through the Earth’s soil crust and through that water gushed out. Sita quenched her thirst. The place is known as Sita Kunda. During the full moon day in Baisakh, every year tribals of nearby areas come and join in the game of hunting wild animals.

Best time to visit

March to June:  Purulia experiences extreme heat at this time. It’s Better to avoid Purulia at this time mainly May and June.

During March and April (Spring), you can visit Ayodhya Hills. Although the weather is quite hot at this time, this is also the best time to see Palash in full bloom. If you are planning to come at this time, don’t forget to carry sunglasses, hats, water bottles and wear light cotton.

July to September: This time Purulia receives moderate rainfall. the temperature is quite pleasant at night time. Don’t forget to carry an umbrella, raincoat, and appropriate footwear.  Ayodhya Pahar looks magical during this time. Lakes are full of water, waterfalls become alive and Hills are covered with shades of green.

October to February: Winter season is the best time to visit Purulia. The weather remains pleasantly cool all through the day. make sure your bookings are done in advance and don’t forget to carry warm clothes. Trekking, rock climbing, nature camping all these activities are available during this time.

How to reach

Air: Purulia does not have an airport. The nearest airport is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Dum Dum, Kolkata, which is around 251km from Purulia. From the airport, travelers can avail themselves of cab service to reach Purulia. Travelers can also take a bus or train to reach Purulia from Kolkata.

Train: From Kolkata, many trains are available for Purulia.  Barrabhum station and Purulia station is the nearest railway station to Ayodhya hill. From Purulia railway station, you can book a local Toto for the bus stand. From the bus stand, you can take a bus for Purulia.

From Purulia station, you can book a local cab to reach your destination.

Bus: From the Dharmatala bus stand (Kolkata) travelers can book a bus for Purulia. Make sure your bus bookings are done in advance.

Day by day plan

In Purulia, hotel check-in starts mainly after 11:00 AM, Book your train accordingly. You can book your cab in advance. For best drivers, check the “Other Information” Section.

Day 1

  • Checked into your hotel and get fresh.
  • Book a local Toto and start’s exploring local Purulia side seen.
    • Visit Saheb Bandh (Shikara ride available)
    • Visit District Science Centre
    • Explore Purulia Chawk Bazar and local sideseen
  • Back to Hotel

Day 2

  • Book a local car for the Ajodhya Pahar side seen and cover
    • Mayur pahar, visit Hanuman temple at the top of the mayur pahar.
    • Marble lake
    • Ram mandir
    • Charida gram/Mukhos gram. Don’t remove this from your Purulia checklist. It’s a must visit the place.
    • Pakhi Pahar
    • Lahoria temple and lahoria dam
    • Lower dam
    • Upper dam
    • Bamni falls
    • Tunga dam
  • Back to Hotel

Day 3

  • Book a local car for the Ajodhya Pahar side seen and cover
    • Murguma hills and lake
    • Mathaburu hills
    • Khairabera dam
    • Kuki dam
  • Back to Hotel

Day 4

You can back to Kolkata

OR

You can explore the Garh circuit

  • You can book a local car for the Garh circuit OR you can book a train from Purulia station to Joychandi Pahar Junction. (45 min train ride)
  • Book a local car or auto for the side seen and cover
    • Garh Panchkot
    • Joychandi Pahar, Joychandi Ma temple is situated at the of the hill. You need to take 500 stairs to reach Joychandi ma temple.
    • Panchet Dam, this dam is between West Bengal and Jhargram states. You can enjoy a Nouka ride here.
    • Baranti
  • Back to the room (Ajodhya circuit) or you can stay in Garh Panchkot

Day 5

  • Back to Kolkata

  • Chau-Jhumur Festival in December
  • Tusu Parab (14 January – 15 January (expected))
